Île-Grande

Its area is about 200 hectares; about 2 km east to west and 1.2 km north to south. There are about 800 permanent inhabitants. Endowed with wild and varied landscapes, the Île-Grande, haloed by a string of islets including two legendary ones, welcomes the tourists in search of calm and beauty during summer.

Cross-paths

A coastal path, marked GR, along 7 km, will allow you to go around the island in about 2 hours and a half. These small paths along the sea will make you discover in turn the swamp of Kervoalant, the small port of Saint-Sauveur and that of port Gélin, pebble or sand beaches, the dunes of Toul Gwenn, the legendary Canton and Aval Islands, the Morvil Island, Le Corbeau, the gallery graves or the Saint-Sauveur Fountain. Perhaps you will take the time to admire the neo-Romanesque church, or visit the ornithological station, to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of the birds of the open sea?

The soul of granite

Rock on the beach, outcropping in the fields, extracted from quarries, or worked by the hand of man, granite has been omnipresent here for centuries, and will remain forever.

The church (new chapel)

Built in 1909-1910 in a primitive neo-Romanesque style, it includes a nave with aisles of 5 spans, completed by a semicircular choir. There is a steeple on the side, and a very discreet sacristy. At the other end, the porch, very Breton, is worth a look. Inside, there are some ancient statues, a St. Mark, a pietà, a crucifix and a Madonna, painted by the Swedish painter Osterlind.

The Saint-Sauveur Fountain

Located near the cemetery, it faces Porz ar Bago. According to the legend, the betrothed went there before getting married. They were kneeling in front of each other on the granite border, each throwing a piece of bread crumbs on the surface of the water and waiting. If the two parcels met, it was auspicious and we could face the marriage without fear, otherwise, it was better to cancel the wedding. Similarly, when children were slow to walk, it was recommended to dive them three times in the waters of the fountain.

The guardhouse

Built on the highest point of the island, the coastguard station (Ti Gwerd) was built in 1778. It is now destroyed, only remains the rock pile on which it was built.

The Château des Landes (Moors Castle)

Construction of the nineteenth century, it was the meeting place for hunting and fishing. It is now hidden and protected from the winds by a thick row of trees.
